FX Renews Rookies 'Atlanta' And 'Better Things'; 'American Horror Story' Starts Hot

Coming off a stellar turn at the Emmys this year, FX (
Twenty-First Century Fox IncFOXA
) continued to tout good news this week with a pair of renewals along with ratings success.

The network on Tuesday officially renewed "Atlanta" and "Better Things" for second seasons after seeing solid starts. "Atlanta" became the most-watched basic cable prime-time scripted comedy premiere in over three years in the key 18–49 demo and built on key measures week-to-week. Meanwhile, "Better Things" is FX's most-successful female-headlined comedy ever and ranks just behind "Atlanta" in terms of women 18–34.

FX rarely gives out early renewals, but both series quickly established themselves with critics and viewers as ones to watch in this young season. It also helps that FX has rising star Donald Glover and breakout talent Pamela Adlon as their leads.

In terms of original programming, Tuesday gave analysts its first official look at the L+3 numbers for the new season of "American Horror Story." Creator Ryan Murphy took a different approach this year and didn't reveal the theme of his popular anthology series. As a result, critics were curious if that would help or hamper the sixth installment in the series.

The results were positive; "AHS: Roanoke" pulled in 8.3 million viewers, with 5.6 million coming from the 18–49 demo. While not a record, it still earned the third highest ratings of any "AHS" ever, coming just short of last year's "AHS: Hotel."
