Sen. Elizabeth Warren Pens Letter To Department Of Justice And FBI

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote a letter to both the Department of Justice (DoJ) and Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI) to mark the eight-year anniversary of Lehman Brothers' collapse.

According to Bloomberg, Warren told the DoJ's inspector general, Michael Horowitz, that a lack of prosecution of bankers and executives is "outrageous and baffling." Specifically, she called for an investigation that could lead to a prison sentence of more than two dozen individuals who were previously referred to the agency for possible criminal prosecution in 2011 for their role in the financial crisis.

Warren said in her letter that a lack of prosecution is "outrageous and baffling." She asked Horowitz why no charges were laid against any of the individuals nearly six years later.

In a separate letter to FBI director James Comey, the senator demanded the immediate release of "any and all materials related to the FBI's investigations and prosecutorial decisions regarding these referrals."

According to Warren, Comey's public comments regarding the agency's investigation into Hillary Clinton's private e-mail server provides a "clear precedent for releasing additional information about the investigation of the parties responsible for the financial crisis."

Speaking to Bloomberg, Warren said that the anniversary of the Lehman collapse marks a "good occasion a good occasion to stop and ask where the real accountability is and get some answers out of the Justice Department about why they haven't prosecuted anyone."

"There's a clear public interest in finding out why none of these individuals or corporations were held responsible," she also told Bloomberg.
