Amazon Adds 'The Departed' To Development Pipeline

The trend of film-to-TV adaptations continues to stay active as Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN on Tuesday announced plans for a series centered on "The Departed."

A co-production with Warner Bros. TV, the project is based on the 2006 Best Picture winner of the same name which starred Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson (which is in turn based on the 2002 international film "Internal Affairs").

The plot, set in modern day Chicago, follows a cop implanted into a ruthless Latino gang which itself has already sent a mole into the police department. The drama would follow each double-agent as they fight to stay undiscovered.

All of the major networks, sans ABC, have film-to-TV projects coming to air over 2016-2017 following a 2015-2016 season that saw a number of similar series fail including "Limitless" and "Rush Hour."

Amazon's next big drama release is the highly anticipated "Goliath" featuring Billy Bob Thornton and from producing powerhouse David E. Kelly.
