Slow Dance: The Picture Frame That 'Slows Down Time'

KickStarter is full of ridiculous ideas, but one can also find some hidden gems. This is the case of "Slow Dance – A Frame that Slows Down Time."

This project, conceived by Massachusetts artist and former Discovery Channel DISCA anchor Jeff Lieberman, "makes things move in ways you never thought possible." Is it scientific art?

The concept is relatively simple to understand: it's a picture frame that makes real-live objects move in what appears to be slow motion. However, what the frame creates is actually an optical illusion, images that play with the limits of your visual perception.

"One of the primary things I hope people get from interacting with this piece is a moment of total silence — where they’re so overtaken by the pure sensory experience of seeing something that breaks all of their rules of reality, that their mind just stops, and they’re like a newborn, taking the world in as it is without any analysis," Lieberman said.

"This piece is a metaphor for all the unseen aspects of reality that are effecting us all the time. It expresses a desire to remind myself, and anyone who uses it, that there is something beyond what we see with our senses — that there is this entire reality beyond human comprehension."

Lieberman launched his project on KickStarter on Monday, and said he needs $70,000 to finish production. So far, the artist has more than 175 people to back him, donating almost $41,000. Shipping of the first pieces, acquired via KickStarter, will start in early 2017. The piece is only expected to hit retail stores by late 2017.
