Apple Music Takes 3 Records To The Top Of Billboard Charts

Many doubted the potential of Apple Inc. AAPL's Apple Music streaming service when it launched a little more than a year ago. However, the men and women working at the tech behemoth’s marketing department are pretty resourceful.

Over the past year, the streaming service has managed to gain traction and popularity – hitting more than 15 million paying subs, and has even started to start some music trends of its own. As pointed out by Hugh McIntyre at Forbes, over 2016, Apple Music has managed to secure exclusive debut/first-week rights for three albums that ended up opening at the first spot in the Billboard 200 albums ranking.

Also noteworthy is the fact that these albums managed to get to the No. 1 place on Billboard’s list, even though they could only be found on Apple’s online streaming platform.

The albums are:

  • Future’s "EVOL"
  • Drake’s "Views"
  • DJ Khaled’s "Major Key"

"The real trick is that unlike every other offering on the market, Apple is the only one that is simultaneously pushing streams and sales at the same time,” McIntyre said. "Because Apple owns both verticals, the company can claim to have been solely responsible for a No. 1 album, when really it's two different kinds of units being moved."
