IDC Says Apple's Smartphone Market Share Falls To 11.8% In Q2

International Data Corporation disclosed Thursday that smartphone volumes were relatively flat in the second quarter marking the second consecutive quarter without growth. However, Apple Inc. AAPL suffered a market share loss in the second quarter at the cost of Samsung.

The research firm said vendors shipped 343.3 million smartphones throughout the world in the three-month period April to June. However, this was relatively flat, up 0.3 percent from the same quarter last year when vendors shipped 342.4 million units. But sequentially, the market witnessed 3.1 percent growth from 333.1 million in the first quarter of 2016.

IDC pointed out that Apple enjoyed a market share of 11.8 percent in the second quarter with a shipment of 40.4 million units. In comparison, the company had a market share of 13.9 percent with 47.5 million unit shipments in the previous year period.

The research firm said that as smartphone competition continued to escalate and upgrades continued to be slow, the tech firm would look to drive sales with a newly designed iPhone 7 combined with their upgrade program in the upcoming fall.

However, Samsung has recorded 5.5 percent year-over-year growth in unit shipment to 77.0 million, boosting its market share to 22.4 percent. In the same period last year, its market share was 21.3 percent with 73.0 million unit shipments.
