The Dow fell 0.50 percent to 18,478.13, while the NASDAQ composite index declined 0.13 percent to 5,093.59. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 0.46 percent to 2,165.13.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Silver: This industry slipped 2.3 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was First Majestic Silver Corp AG, which fell 6.6 percent. Silver futures declined 1.4 percent to trade at $19.42 an ounce.
  • Foreign Utilities: This industry declined 1.6 percent by 11:00 am with CPFL Energia S.A. (ADR) CPL moving down 1.7 percent. CPFL Energia shares have climbed 29.83 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 5.19 percent in the same period.
  • Gold: This industry fell 1.3 percent by 11:00 am ET. Golden Star Resources Ltd. (USA) GSS shares dropped 17 percent in today's trading. Golden Star Resources reported a Q2 loss of $22 million on revenue of $51.5 million.
  • Industrial Metals & Minerals: The industry dropped 1.2 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Golden Minerals Co AUMN, which declined 9.7 percent.
