The Dow rose 0.24 percent to 18,602.72, while the NASDAQ composite index climbed 0.88 percent to 5,080.70. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.39 percent to 2,172.12.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Silver: This industry slipped 3 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was Coeur Mining Inc CDE, which fell 8.2 percent. Coeur Mining is scheduled to report quarterly financial results on July 27, 2016.
  • Nonmetallic Mineral Mining: This industry declined 1.8 percent by 11:00 am with Yanzhou Coal Mining Co Ltd (ADR) YZC moving down 3.1 percent. Yanzhou Coal Mining shares have increased 4.35 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 1.67 percent in the same period.
  • Copper: This industry fell 1.3 percent by 11:00 am ET. Freeport-McMoRan Inc FCX shares dropped 4.6 percent in today's trading. Freeport-McMoRan is expected to release quarterly financial results on July 26, 2016.
  • Regional - Northeast Banks: The industry dropped 1.1 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Codorus Valley Bancorp, Inc. CVLY, which declined 3.4 percent.
