Project Bloks: How Google Intends To Teach Kids To Code While Playing

Many readers might not be aware, but there are several toys in the market right now that are aimed at teaching kids how to code – or, in other words, create software, apps, websites, etc. For instance, Mattel, Inc. MAT’s Fisher-Price has recently presented a $50 Think & Learn Code-a-Pillar, which teaches coding basics to preschoolers. Sphero’s rolling robot can fulfill a similar role, and Apple Inc. AAPL tried to follow suit with its Swift Playgrounds app.

Now it’s Alphabet Inc GOOGL GOOG’s turn. On Monday, Google announced its own coding initiative: Project Bloks. Pretty much like the company does with its Android operating system, Project Bloks will work as an open hardware platform for anyone to be able to create physical coding experiences for kids.

Just in case the video above was not clear enough, Bloks includes a system of toy blocks that can be connected to control other toys (for instance, to make a robot draw), helping kinds learn the logic behind coding.

However, it should be noted that the project is still in a development stage, and a launch date has not been provided. Having said this, the news was released now to attract developers and partners from around the globe.
