General Motors To Work On Fuel Cells For Unmanned Navy Submarines

Detroit Free Press' Greg Gardner reported on General Motors Company GM's new initiative to collaborate with the U.S. Navy to build hydrogen fuel cells in unmanned submarines.

Currently, "none of GM's brands have a fuel-cell vehicle on the market yet, but the company has been working on the technology for years," according to Gardner. "This is the automaker’s second recent collaborative effort with the U.S. military."

Beforehand, General Motors worked with the U.S. Army to demonstrate a “fuel-cell reconnaissance vehicle."

Experience Will Help Our Automotive Business

Even if General Motors doesn't score a large contract with the Navy after working with them, management believed the experience would be worthwhile.

"Our customers will benefit from additional lessons we learn about the performance of fuel cells in non-automotive applications that will be useful in GM’s drive to offer fuel cells across consumer markets," said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM global fuel cell activities.

At time of writing, General Motors traded at $29.70, up 1.3 percent.
