Netflix, Inc. NFLX has unveiled a new application logo for mobile devices, according to a report on CNNMoney.
The company dropped the "etflix" in favor of a simple red "N." The new logo appeared on Netflix's Instagram, Facebook and Twitter profiles Monday, and the ensign will also soon be the face of Netflix's mobile app.
Interestingly, Netflix also plans to stick with its old logo as well -- "Netflix" spelled out in red letters on a white background.
Retaining two logos could be risky for Netflix as it creates confusion among users.
The report, citing Sterling Marketing founder Karen Leland, recalled when The Coca-Cola Co KO launched New Coke in 1985, it was a massive failure.
Netflix's decision, could be driven by "the way the logo will appear on social apps," Leland added. "A lot of people are accessing those on their mobile devices," and the slimmed down design could be an attempt to save space on a smaller screen.
At time of writing, shares of Netflix fell 2.76 percent to $91.21.
