Hey, Siri: Why Is An Updated Version Of A 4-Year-Old Apple Device Flying Off The Shelves?

About three months ago, Apple Inc. AAPL released an overhauled version of the four-year-old iPhone 5, the iPhone SE. The device was conceived as an affordable option to the large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, launched in 2015 and 2014, respectively.

Although reviews were mixed, and many analysts argued that the tech behemoth was running out of ideas, the iPhone SE was a big success – even surprising CEO Tim Cook. In fact, the popularity of the device was so high that the company has not been able to keep up with the pace of production needed to cover demand. At this time, people who order an iPhone SE from Apple have to wait several weeks before receiving it.

According to Apple Insider, these shipping delays have not only impacted the US Apple Store, but also several overseas markets.

"Demand has been very strong and exceeds supply at this point, but we're working hard to get the iPhone SE into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," Cook said during Apple’s last earnings call.

The low price point of the iPhone SE, which retails at $399, versus the iPhone 6S’ price of $650, has been critical to the device’s success in emerging markets like China and India, where many people count with less disposable income than U.S. citizens. Also appealing to many is the iPhone SE’s small screen, the only one among high-end phones.
