Google And Lenovo Are Creating An Extreme Smartphone

Google, owned by Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL, and Lenovo Group Limited (ADR) LNVGY are creating a monster smartphone — Phab 2 Pro — based on augmented reality (AR).

According to Lenovo's website, "The Phab 2 Pro is the world's first smartphone to include Tango — a new technology from Google that enables augmented reality (AR) gaming and utilities."

"All you have to do is look through the Phab 2 Pro, and you'll see objects and information overlaid onto the real world," the ad on the site said.

Lenovo said with the smartphone, "You can measure objects with just your phone. Or visualize furniture like a new table or sofa to see how it looks in your home. Or simply play with your virtual pet. Wherever you go with the Phab 2 Pro, there's always more to explore."

Meanwhile, Google said Tango apps that work with Tango will overlay digital objects on top of your surroundings. For example, if you're shopping for a new kitchen countertop, Tango lets you view your kitchen "through your phone and visualize different options—even walk around the virtual furniture like it's actually there."

In the future, Google hopes Tango will be able to help users navigate physical locations, such as a shopping center, museum or even places you've never been before.

"Tango can overlay directions to your destination, then provide more info once you arrive. We've already started to work on this, and we plan to bring select locations online later this year," Johnny Lee, director of engineering, said on the blog post.
