Tesla's Elon Musk Just Briefed The Pentagon

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla Motors Inc TSLA and founder of SpaceX just met with the U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and high level officials at the Pentagon.

The topic of conversation however won't be disclosed, for obvious reasons. However, the conversations did focus on "innovation," at least according to a Defense Department spokesperson who spoke to CNN.

Musk's SpaceX already has a close relationship with the government and has an $82 million contract with the Air Force.

It's All About Innovation

Peter Cook, a spokesperson for the Defense Department also told CNN that Carter "has been reaching out to a number of members of the technology community to get their ideas, their feedback, find out what's going on in the world of innovation."

The spokesperson's comments appear to be consistent with Carter's strategy of bringing Silicon Valley's innovation and attitude to the Pentagon.

The Pentagon even opened up a West Coast office under the name "Defense Innovation Unit Experimental" program, or DIUx for short. However, the initial launch wasn't much of a success so government officials are turning to private companies for any help they can provide.

Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the Pentagon is "launching DIUx 2.0" and will be "taking a page out of straight from the Silicon Valley playbook."

First step in copying Silicon Valley's playbook and ridding government bureaucracy: Hire a Silicon Valley veteran, not a military veteran. Carter named Isaac Taylor, an ex-Google executive who worked on research projects including Google Glass and self-driving cars. He replaced Raj Shah, an ex-F-16 fighter pilot and combat veteran who also headed a technology startup.
