It's Here: Tesla's New Powerwall Station Now Available In The U.S.

Tesla Motors IncTSLA
's CEO Elon Musk unveiled last year its first non-car product, a home energy storage system named Powerwall.

According to Bloomberg, U.S. consumers are now enjoying Tesla's newest release. The energy storage system consists of a 214 pound and 4-foot tall system that stores electricity from home solar systems and provides backup power in the case of a conventional outage.

The system retails for around $3,000, which doesn't include the hookup fees.

One of Tesla's first customers is Steve Yates, a resident of Monkton, Vermont. Speaking to Bloomberg, he said that the energy storage system provides him with a backup power source – something that would have come in handy during 2011's hurricane Irene, as he was without electricity for 36 hours.

Yates described the device as being "kind of art-deco looking."

Yates actually received his unit for free from his electricity provider, Green Mountain Power who made an initial purchase of 500 Powerwalls. In fact, the electricity power told Bloomberg that it has received interest from more than 700 customers who want the product.

"We're confident that we will sell or lease every one," said CEO Mary Powell. "We're trying to transform a 100-year-old electric grid, and Tesla is killing it in terms of driving down cost while constantly improving the technology."

Tesla makes its Powerwalls devices, along with the larger Powerpacks for businesses and utilities, at its Gigafactory facilities in Nevada. Both products make up Tesla's Energy division.
