WGN America's "Underground" made a impact when it debuted earlier this year and now the drama has been given the greenlight for a second go-around in 2017.

The series, which set in the time of the Underground Railroad, pulls in 3 million total viewers a week over its Live+7 numbers. WGN America said last week's episode was the No. 1 original scripted series on cable and the No. 1 most social cable drama on the night.

All of those numbers translate into a big win for the Tribune Media Co TRCO-owned channel and its investors, which is producing the series with its partners at Sony SNE. Given WGN America just started entering this space a few years ago, the year-to-year comparison numbers are vastly inflated, often in the triple (and even quadruple) digits, yet analysts are still encouraged by the company's progress.

"Underground's" renewal comes not long after fellow rookie series "Outsiders" was also given a second season order. In addition, the network has "Salem" on its roster, which will start its third season this October.
