Internal corporate synergy could pay off for Viacom
VIA
as the company announced on Monday it will spin off its popular "Lip Sync Battle" series. The newest edition to the franchise will be called "Lip Sync Battle Jr." and debut as a special airing jointly on Nickelodeon and Spike. Described as a way to "celebrate kids' love of music and comedy," this new version will add in a few variety elements to make it more kid-centric. More "Lip Sync" branded specials are expected to be considered across the company and if the specials hit the same level of awareness as the original, it is possible they could be converted into full-fledged series. The "Jr." edition comes from Casey Patterson Entertainment and Matador who also work on the flagship series. The original "Lip Sync Battle" originated as a recurring segment on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" and was later sold as a series with Fallon, Stephen Merchant and John Krasinski serving as producers. The series currently draws around 4 million viewers each week, plus has a sizable social presence. It was recently renewed for a third season.
