Report: Amazon Banning Sale Of Google's Chromecast & Apple TV

  • Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN will reportedly ban the sale of Apple Inc. AAPL and Google Inc GOOG GOOGL streaming devices.
  • Apparently, the Internet retailer sent an e-mail to marketplace sellers, informing they will no longer be able to offer the Apple TV and Chromecast devices.
  • Shares of Amazon are up roughly 1 percent on Thursday trading; Apple, down almost 1.5 percent; Google, almost flat, though slightly up.

According to an article published by Bloomberg on Thursday afternoon, Amazon will ban the sale of Apple TV and Chromecast devices on its marketplaces, looking to gain an edge in the video streaming space. In an e-mail sent to marketplace sellers, the company said it would be allowing no new listings for said products, and that it would be removing the currently existing listings on October 29.

As per Bloomberg, the e-mail explained, "Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime (…) It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion," – and Prime Video does not run very smoothly on Apple TV and Chromecast devices.

In addition, author Spencer Soper notes, Amazon’s Fire TV stick, “which plugs into an HDMI port to connect televisions with streaming services such as Netflix and Prime Video, is the company’s best-selling electronic device.”

Users and investors should also notice that, while the Apple TV and Chromecast are being removed, Roku Inc.’s hardware, Microsoft Corporation MSFT’s Xbox, and Sony Corp (ADR) SNE’s PlayStation will still be available on Amazon marketplaces.
