As Native American reservations are governed by their own laws, many tribes have capitalized on their ability to house facilities that are considered illegal in the states they reside in. Now that marijuana is becoming more popular among Americans, many reservations have decided to allow the drug even if their state prohibits it. In order to take advantage of the growing industry, the 400-person Santee Sioux tribe in South Dakota is planning to take it one step further by opening up the first ever
marijuana resort
in the United States.
Public Consumption Issues
In states like Colorado where recreational marijuana is legal, pot tourism has exploded. However, public consumption is still prohibited, meaning that while it's legal to buy the drug, visiting users often resort to smoking in their cars or in alleyways. However, on the Santee Sioux reservation, this issue will be eliminated as the tribe plans to set up a resort that caters to marijuana users.
An Adult Playground
The resort will include a smoking lounge, night club, arcade games and various food and drink options for pot enthusiasts to enjoy. The tribe has said it will eventually expand the resort to include gambling options like slot machines as well as an outdoor music venue in order to create the ultimate "adult playground." While smaller marijuana-friendly bed and breakfast establishments have sprung up around Colorado, this will be the first major venue to allow public consumption.
New Revenue
The tribe will have to enforce strict rules for those using the resort in order to ensure that marijuana doesn't leave the premises, but the venture is expected to draw in a great deal of revenue. Many Native American tribes have struggled financially in recent years, but recent changes to marijuana laws has given tribes who are willing to embrace the marijuana culture a new revenue stream.
