Gatsby Lawn Party: Detroit Is Bringing The 1920s Back In Style

"And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy."

No matter what kind of party you enjoy, a group of Gatsby-loving Detroiters are bringing the 1920s to the 2010s.

The first annual Detroit Gatsby Lawn Party will take place on Sunday, September 13 at Detroit's Palmer Park. Amid several swanky musical acts will be a dance floor, where attendees can learn to swing like the characters from F. Scott Fitzgerald's legendary 1925 novel, "The Great Gatsby."

According to the event's press release, there will also be an interactive “Detroit in the 1920s” exhibit to "give attendees a better understanding of what life was like in Detroit during the Jazz Era and the changes the city underwent during that time."

Writer Jean Scheffler will be on hand to tell the story of her family's involvement with the Purple Gang, the famous bootlegging mob from the 1920s and 1930s.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Gatsby party without a few cocktails. A Speakeasy tent will be on hand, although this party is a family affair for people of all ages.

"Our goal is to bring the people of Detroit and its surrounding communities together by creating and event that's a jewel in the crown of the city," according to event organizer Alison Chevalier. The party "focuses on the music and fashion of Detroit in the golden age of Jazz as well as the unique roll Detroiters played in Prohibition."

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased for $35. A portion of the day's proceeds will benefit The Friends of The Alger Theater. The Alger Theater was built in 1935 and is the last remaining Streamline Moderne Theater of that era.
