The golf course used to be a haven for top executives looking for a new environment to do business and relax. However recent years have seen a
marked decline
in the public's interest in the sport leaving golf resorts to find new ways to attract customers and revive their revenue streams.
Segway Golf
One way some resorts are hoping to spice up their offerings is through the use of
Segway golf carts
. Segway golf carts allow users to ride on a single person unit that also carries their clubs from hole to hole. The carts are able to handle around a 20 percent incline and run at some 11 mph. Not only do the carts claim to attract more golfers to the course, but they are also meant to do less damage to the grounds, thus reducing landscaping costs.
Shorter Games
Some courses are making the game shorter and easier in order to appeal to those who don't have time it takes to get good at the game or play an entire 18 hole round. Others have created new types of golf that make the game more accessible. Some courses have extended the size of their holes to make it easier and others have created courses that use soccer balls or frisbees instead of traditional golfballs and clubs.
Golf Clubs
A company called
Topgolf International, Inc.
has created a line of driving ranges that incorporates food and drink to give players the feel of going to a nightclub. The company sets up driving ranges that are equipped with tables, seating and waitstaff so that customers can hit balls while having dinner and drinks with friends.
