IDC Says Worldwide Table Growth Will Continue Slowing In 2015 While 2-In-1 Devices Maintain Momentum

Worldwide shipments of tablets and two-in-one devices are expected to decline 3.8 percent from 2014 and reach 221.8 million units in 2015,

according to the International Data Corporation's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. In a report published on Wednesday, IDC noted that its most recent projection represents a modest downward revision from its prior forecast of 234.5 million units shipped in 2015. However, some segments of the product category are expected to experience strong growth. Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director of Tablets for IDC commented that cellular-capable tablets and two-in-one devices (such as "phablets") will see growth in certain parts of the world, despite representing a small portion of the entire market. "Those cellular-connected devices fill multiple needs for vendors and carriers around the world; they offer a quick solution to price and margin erosion, and when compared to smartphones, they offer a less expensive way for carriers to increase their subscriber base," Bouchard commented. IDC is projecting this segment will grow at a five-year compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6 percent, compared to Wi-Fi-only devices that are projected to experience a negative five-year CAGR of 0.4 percent. By 2019, cellular connected devices will see is market share increase to 40 percent from 31 percent in 2014. On the other hand, Wi-Fi only devices will see its market share dip to 60 percent from 69 percent over the same time period.
