's newest product, Apple Watch, has the ability to measure its users heart rate. During a workout session, a user of a Watch can track his or her heart rate through built-in sensors and have data displayed on their wrist. Apple
discussed the topic in a blog post on its website. When an individual isn't caught up in an intense workout, the Watch will measure the user's heart rate every 10 minutes and store the data in the Health app. The built-in sensor uses "photoplethysmography" technology. The Watch uses green LED lights paired with light-sensitive photodiodes to detect the amount of blood flowing a user's wrist at any given time. When the heart beats, the blood flow through the wrist is greater. By flashing LED lights hundreds of times per second, the Watch can calculate the number of times the heart beats each minute. However, potential Watch buyers with tattoos on their wrist may need to think again before buying the product. The ink, pattern and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor. The company suggests connecting the Watch wirelessly to an external heart rate monitor, such as a Bluethooth chest strap. The popular Apple-related blog, MacRumors,
commented
that Apple doesn't have a "useful solution" beyond connecting the Watch with an external devise, suggesting that users with tattoos "may be forced to deal with the issue."
