has sparked a wave of competitors and left investors wondering if the company had nowhere to go but down. However, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is planning to leverage the company's already massive user base to make itself an even bigger part of users' everyday life through its Messenger app.
Messenger Gets A Boost
Facebook's Messenger has been a recent development that Zuckerberg says will propel the company forward in the coming years. At the Facebook's developer conference, he pledged to roll out several new features that will make Messenger a go-to platform for users everywhere. On Monday, one of those new features was

— a video calling feature that will put the company squarely in competition with

Hangouts. The new offering will allow users to make voice and video calls between computers or mobile devices using their internet connection. To begin with, the service will only be available in a handful of countries, but Facebook says it is planning to add additional regions in the coming months.

The video calling feature is expected to entice more Facebook users to engage with the messenger app as Facebook executives continue to build on the app's functionality. Zuckerberg has promised to continue improving messenger's appeal by introducing new features, the giving users the ability to send money to other Messenger users. He also said that developers will be able to create new apps that will be able to function within Messenger.
