Check Out Twitter's New Ad Experiment

A couple of weeks ago, Twitter Inc TWTR started testing a new kind of app ads on a small group of users. Now, taking another step towards monetization, the company is adding promoted tweets to some users’ profile pages on both web and mobile versions. However, for now, verified profiles will not include these ads.

New Ads, New Focus

The ads will be targeted according to each user’s interests, activity, etc. – meaning that they only show up for users who are logged in.

The promoted tweets will appear on users’ profiles, but they will be separated from traditional tweets by breaks and a “Suggested by Twitter” label.

Re/code Responds

A Re/code

article explored the possibility of reaching non-registered users. They said that “down the road, placing ads within user profiles could be an intriguing way for Twitter to make money from its ‘logged out’ audience, the group of people who visit Twitter or see tweets online but don’t actually have an account. These people may visit Twitter to see what their friends are saying; soon they could see an ad during that same visit.

"Given Twitter’s new partnership with Google, these kinds of fly-by users may be more common going forward. The partnership means tweets will appear more prominently in search results, and, in theory, more people who aren’t logged into Twitter will soon be visiting the site.”
