GoPro Is Looking Into Cube Cameras (Or At Least Trying To Prevent Others From Doing So)

GoPro Inc GPRO was granted a patent Tuesday for a cube-shaped housing to hold a camera.

According to a report from re/code, GoPro "engineers began working on a square camera design in 2011, but declined to make any product announcements."

"GoPro files patents like these to protect our technology and intellectual property," a company spokesperson told re/code.

The report speculates that a low-cost and highly compact camera might expand GroPro's audience while the company's current cameras are rectangular in shape.

Shares of GoPro closed at $43.41 Tuesday, down 0.39 percent.
