Sony Corp SNE on Monday announced a new music platform called PlayStation Music which will be powered by Spotify, the popular music streaming service. The service will offer over 30 million songs as background music to PlayStation games.

In a statement Sony president Andrew House said, “Music is a core component of the entertainment offering that consumers expect from Sony, and our goal with PlayStation Music is to provide the most compelling music experiences to the millions of PlayStation Network users around the world. This partnership represents the best in music and the best in gaming coming together, which will benefit the vibrant and passionate communities of both Spotify and the PlayStation Network. We're thrilled to make Spotify the foundation of our strategy with PlayStation Music.”

For Spotify, the move comes as competition for share in the music streaming industry heats up with competitors such as Pandora Media Inc P. The company has taken steps over the past couple of years to integrate with other services such as Uber so consumers are less willing to seek out other services.

Spotify will replace Sony's Music Unlimited Service and will initially reach 64 million video game players in 41 countries, according to company estimates.
