Caterpillar Reports Machine Sales Declined Nine Percent Through October

In an
8-K filing, Caterpillar CAT reported worldwide retail sales of machines had declined. Total machine sales worldwide fell nine percent for the three-month rolling period ended in October when compared to the same period a year ago. Latin America saw the largest decline in total machine sales at 35 percent while Asia/Pacific sales fell 21 percent. East Asia and Middle East sales were down five percent while North America was the only region that showed sales growth at eight percent. For the three month period ending in September, total retail sales of machines were 10 percent lower. Retail sales of machines for the resources industries fell 20 percent for the three month period ending in October in which all major regions saw a decline in sales. The sales decline seen in the period represents an improvement from the 28 percent decline in sales for the three month period ending in September. Retail sales of machines for the construction industries fell five percent for the month period ending in October. Sales were lower in all regions except North America, where sales rose 10 percent. The decline in sales seen in the period worsened from the three percent decline for the three month period ending in September. Energy and Transportation Retail Sales for the three month period ending in October rose 16 percent compared to a nine percent rise for the three month period ending in September. Transportation related sales surged 67 percent, outperforming the 40 percent rise reported for the three month period ending in September. Shares of Caterpillar were trading lower by around 0.75 percent in Thursday's pre-market session following the release of the data.
