Exelon Generation, operator of the largest nuclear fleet in the U.S., has awarded an integrated outage contract to GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) for the utility's entire fleet of boiling water reactor (BWR) nuclear energy facilities. In addition, the agreement extends a nuclear fuel services contract for six Exelon reactors. The total value of the contracts is nearly $300 million. This announcement comes on the heels of Exelon's historic $500 million GE gas turbine order. Under the outage services agreement, which runs through the completion of the spring 2018 outage season, GEH will provide a full portfolio of outage and inspection services to Exelon's fleet of 14 BWR plants throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Northeast. “These contracts build on our decades-long support of Exelon's reactor fleet,” said Kevin Walsh, Senior Vice President, Nuclear Services and Fuels, GEH. “We look forward to continuing to support Exelon Generation with the best technology, fuel and outage services in the industry.” The agreement also includes assisting with refuel floor activities and performing under-vessel and inspection services for Exelon's BWRs, which combined have the capacity to power approximately 14 million homes with clean, carbon-free electricity. The fuel contract extends Global Nuclear Fuel's (a GE-led joint venture) current work at six Exelon reactors through 2018 and is in addition to the four other Exelon BWRs the company also fuels.
