Twitter Introduces New Mobile App Platform

According to Gigaom, Twitter Inc TWTR introduced its first platform for mobile app developers, called Fabric, at its first developer conference on Wednesday.

Fabric has three components with Twitter Kit being "the real carrot in the Fabric arsenal," according to Gigaom author Carmel DeAmicis.

Twitter will now allow developers to provide a phone number login to mobile app users, rather than social or email login, through a feature called Digits.

According to DeAmicis, "this is a difficult technical problem to solve – you must have agreements with wireless carriers around the world — which is why most mobile app developers can’t do it on their own."

The Gigacom report noted that "Twitter is facilitating the process...and potentially winning developers over to Fabric as a result. Facebook and Google don’t have a comparable offering."

Twitter Inc recently traded at $49.68, down 1.8 percent.
