PayPal Competitors Unmoved By eBay Inc Spin-Off News

Few if any competitors of sector giant PayPal were reacting Tuesday to news of its impending spin-off from eBay Inc EBAY.

PayPal's biggest competitors like Google Inc., Apple Inc. and the credit-card companies Visa Inc., American Express Co. and Mastercard Inc. can hardly be considered pure plays in the online payment sector.

None were showing signs of significant reaction to the PayPal news.

Smaller and more focused rivals like VeriFone Systems Inc., Heartland Payment Systems, Inc. were largely unchanged while Moneygram International Inc. MGI fell three percent.

But clawing their way up through the development stage, venture-backed companies like Stripe and Square were making a few waves.

The online payment company Dwolla obtained an additional $9.7 million in funding from the venture fund CME Group Tuesday.

The similar start-up Stripe will benefit from a $10 million venture fund, also announced Tuesday, to finance businesses and applications built on the Stripe Connect platform.
