Apple Lowers Pricing on Macbooks

Apple
AAPL
announced the release of the MacBook Pro with Retina display on July 29th 2014. In the PC space Apple doesn't really have that huge of an edge, well at least from the context of components. The MacBook with retina display will be 0.71-inches thin, and will come equipped with the latest Intel
INTC
CPU. Furthermore, the low end will have double the RAM, and additional hard disk/SSD storage space. What's interesting about Tuesday's announcement is that Apple is starting to lower the pricing of its lower-end non-Retina display counterpart by $100. This allows Apple to be more price competitive, but it may end up weighing on gross profit margins. Dell and Hewlett-Packard
HPQ
have lower average selling prices than Apple. So for Apple to display sudden interest in consumers that run on a tighter budget, it may spark debate among analysts as to whether or not Apple can retain its premium positioning in consumer electronics. Apple is down by 0.57 percent in Tuesday's trading session.
