Detroit Automakers Rebound with Style

The Big 3 reported double digit sales growth in the US last month, marking a comeback for Detroit automakers.

Ford F, General Motors GM and Chrysler can attribute this recent success to stylish and daring vehicle deigns instead of conservative and safe designs, marking a return to their roots and what made the Big 3 successful in the first place.

With consumers driving cars that average 11 years old and coming out of a recession, it's no wonder that models such as Ford's revamped Fusion and GM's Cadillac ATS are capturing the hearts of many new car buyers. Armed with extra cash, consumers are no longer looking for a stock vehicle that gets the job done, instead opting for vehicles that grant them the freedom of individual expression.

Chrysler estimates from April sales that annual sales of vehicles will top more than 15 million units barring a collapse in the housing market or rise in unemployment. The Auburn Hills-based automaker has every reason to be optimistic on the growth of the industry, with sales of its sleek Grand Cherokee up 21% in 2012.

With Detroit automakers taking risks and going back to doing what initially made them successful in the mid-20th century, this could very well be the first step to Detroit's return to prosperity.
