Tesla Opens Latest New York Showroom to Curiosity Seekers, Few Buyers
Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA) launched the first of 10 new showrooms Friday to open across North America over the next few months. The showroom, located in the Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall in Garden City, New York, attracted curiosity seekers and a few buyers.
By mid-day Saturday, Tesla had taken deposits on 20 Model S electric cars at the Long Island location, according to a sales rep for the company. The process of ordering a car takes about one year, including 6 months to configure the car. Buyers must put down a $5,000 deposit.
The showroom displayed just one model, configured with options to price at $92,000. The basic Model S starts at around $50,000.
Tesla plans to open stores in New Jersey, California, Florida, Virginia and Toronto, Canada in October and November.
Tesla Motors closed at $30.82 Friday, losing $0.88.
