FirstEnergy Nuclear
Operating Company (FENOC) today announced plans to expand used nuclear fuel
storage capacity at its two-unit Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport,
Pa.
Under the plan, above-ground, airtight steel and concrete canisters will be
installed that provide cooling to used fuel assemblies through natural air
circulation. The canisters will be stored on a thick concrete pad located
within Beaver Valley's highly secured, protected area, providing additional
safety assurance. The storage system will be monitored closely by trained
personnel and the NRC to assure its integrity.
