Overseas, European markets ended their trading session lower. Britain's FTSE 100 lost 1.92%, Germany's DAX decreased by 2.21% and France's CAC 40 slid by 2.17% on the session. Asian stocks ended their session higher, however. China's Shanghai Index gained 0.84%, Japan's Nikkei 225 increased by 1.15%, and the Hang Seng index rallied by 1.71%.

On the economic calendar, MBA Mortgage Applications came in at 10.3% versus a previous number of 0.2%; Wholesale Inventories came in at -0.1% versus an estimate of 0.5%. On the commodity front, gold and silver futures traded lower today, with gold trading about 1.6% lower today. Energy futures are lower as well, with crude oil down over 0.7% near the $96.10 level and gasoline futures are trading lower by about 2.06%. Natural Gas futures are lower by about 2.3% and copper futures are trading over 3.9% lower.

On the earnings front this afternoon, Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) Reports Q1 EPS $0.43 vs $0.39 Est; Revenues $11.3B vs $11.02B Est; Green Mountain Coffee (NASDAQ: GMCR) Reports Q4 EPS $0.47 vs $0.48 Est; Sales $711.90M vs $760.48M Est; General Motors (NYSE: GM) Reports Q3 EPS $1.03 vs $0.96 Est; Revenues $36.7B vs $36.66B Est; Macy's (NYSE: M) Reports Q3 EPS $0.32 vs $0.16 Est; Revenues $5.85B vs $5.89B Est.

In corporate news, Sprint (NYSE: S) announced that it closed over $4 billion in notes. The company intends to use the net proceeds for general corporate purposes.

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) announced that the US Navy has awarded it an $87 million contract. The contract's proceeds will be used to developed unmanned underwater vehicles. The timeframe for the contract was undisclosed.

Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) announced that it will join Air Liquide to develop fuel cell products. The joint venture is being pursued to maximize activity in European markets.
