When asked about the press release, a spokesperson for the Securities and Exchange Commission told Benzinga that while the organization is “not commenting on that,” when the SEC sues someone, it typically acknowledges this fact with a statement on its
litigation release
page. At press time, BriefingWire.com had not returned a request for comment. However,
StreetInsider
reports that Muddy Waters has now confirmed that the press release is indeed a hoax. In an e-mail to StreetInsider, Muddy Waters wrote, “The BriefingWire release on Carson Block and Muddy Waters, LLC this morning is a hoax. Muddy Waters, LLC has spoken with BriefingWire, which has agreed to remove the libelous submission."
UPDATE:
In an e-mail sent to Benzinga, Muddy Waters confirmed to us that the press release was indeed a hoax, saying, "Yes, the posting this morning on BriefingWire.com was indeed a hoax. We have spoken to the management at BriefingWire.com and they have taken down the posting."
