August NICS Data Up 1.4% Year Over Year

National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) data for August implies continuing improvement in firearm and ammo sales, but has slowed on a one and two year basis. The August increase was a deceleration from June and July which were up 3.9% and 10.7% respectively. Piper Jaffray continues to believe the YoY increase is positive for retailers such as Cabela's, (NYSE: CAB) Dick's Sporting Goods, (NYSE: DKS) and Big 5 Sporting Goods (NASDAQ: BGFV).
NICS data for CAB stores are up 5.4% YoY as well.
Piper Jaffray states that some risk factors include general economic conditions, discretionary purchases, and competition.
CAB closed Tuesday at $17.05
DKS closed Tuesday at $25.92
BGFV closed Tuesday at $12.42
