With a quick scan of Google Shopping, I was able to track down a 3D television set for a reasonable $9000. The 42" Phillips WOWvx promises next generation 3D technology at just a hair less than a new car. If this seems a little out of your budget, look no further, because Panasonic is out to bring 3D to the mainstream.
Panasonic (NYSE: PC) announced today that it will be rolling out with a 3D television package, exclusively available at Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) for $2,900, will include a 50" 3D TV, a 3D Blu-ray player, and one pair of compatible 3D glasses. Additional glasses are available at the arm-and-a-leg rate of $149.99 a pair.
Besides the question of price parity, I am left wondering who is looking forward to sitting around watching TV with silly glasses on. 3 hours of these uncomfortable glasses was plenty while watching 'Avatar'. I just cannot envision people donning these glasses every single day for hours as they watch their local news, favorite sitcom or a sports game.
3D will have to make some serious moves to go from novelty to mainstream. A poll on CNBC this morning gave us a good idea of where consumers stand:
Are you going to purchase a 3D TV?
