President-elect
Donald Trump
pledged to the American public he will utilize his business acumen and negotiating skills to restore jobs.

James McGregor, an expert on the Chinese market and consumers, was a guest on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" segment on Wednesday to offer his take on what U.S.–China relations might look like moving forward.

We're Not In Kansas Anymore

According to McGregor, American businesses have indeed been taken advantage of, as Trump has claimed, and a pushback from the president-elect was needed. The problem is that the pushback from Trump happened too quickly and is akin to an "unguided missile."

Meanwhile, China's government has already planned many retaliatory actions it can take, including specific American companies or sectors as a whole.

"This is not a real estate deal in New York," McGregor said in reference to Trump's vast experience in the real estate sector. "You are playing with the big boys here. We need to back off and be smart in the way we deal with China — but a pushback is welcome."

McGregor continued that this pushback seems confusing to the business community because it is uncertain what the ultimate outcome may be.

Trump's Inner Circle

McGregor further suggested that Trump's inner circle, including a vocal China critic Peter Navarro, may not be the best of choices.

McGregor said Navarro "doesn't know a lot about China but has a very strong attitude" with a "tabloid view of pushing a bunch of extremes." Furthermore, as a key member of Trump's trade and industrial policy, he brings simple solutions to complex problems.

Wilbur Ross, Trump's Secretary-elect of Commerce, has done many deals internationally throughout his career but he isn't "up to date" on U.S.–China economic relations.
