Re/Code recently reported that Google Inc
GOOGL
is working on a project, tentatively called ‘Pony Express', which will allow Gmail users to receive and pay their bills within the platform. Nick Bilton, The New York Times columnist and Jon Steinberg, The Daily Mail North America CEO, were on CNBC Wednesday to discuss the implications of this service and what Google is trying to achieve by launching it. Post Office Killer "Kudos to Jason Del Rey at Re/Code for this scoop, but the one thing that Jason has buried in his articles, he talks about bill payments and then he says maybe other types of mail as well," Steinberg said. "There was a bunch of start-ups that came out that did this whole thing around digitizing your mail. Now the thing is called ‘Pony Express'. I think this is a post office killer, I think payments is only one aspect of it and maybe just what is leaked out so far." Re-Approaching Payments Bilton was asked if with this service Google is trying to reapproach payment systems after getting mixed reviews for Google Wallet. He replied, "You look across all these platforms…Facebook, they are integrating payments into their messaging platform, look at SnapChat where you can send money across SnapChat using Square, you also have Square Cash." "There are slews and slews of these different applications where you can send money to people and in a very simple way and I think that Google doesn't want to miss out on that and what they are seeing is people don't use Google+ that much, sure they probably use the messenger service, but I am sure not as much as they use Gmail itself and it seems like the perfect way to do it," Bilton concluded.
