Hospitality major Marriott International Inc MAR is witnessing a lot of growth in the Asia Pacific region driven primarily by the increasing number of Chinese travellers. Simon Cooper, president & managing director for Asia Pacific at Marriott International was on CNBC Monday to talk about the growth potential in Asia Pacific and the destination preferences of the Chinese Traveller.

“Asia Pacific is a good growth story,” Cooper said. “RevPAR is not as strong as America, but the story here is really about growth and new hotels and growing the pipeline. The last two years, we have grown our pipeline considerably and more than our direct competition and that’s really the name of the game in Asia Pacific.”

Is there Enough Demand To Meet The Supply?

“Certainly, I think the inter-regional is the most important, clearly China rules that,” Cooper replied. “After you have got 115 million, I think is going to be the number for Chinese that travel from China last year, obviously Honk Kong and Macau […] up a lot of that, but then the next is inter-region. So you are talking […] Phuket, Bali, lots of these places Chinese are now becoming the number one or number two in terms of travellers.”

Where Are The Chinese Travelling To?

“They are travelling much further distances, you obviously hear the stories of London and Paris, that’s obviously a very small percentage,” Cooper said. “Within South East Asia it’s very strong and Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, these new places are very popular for Chinese travellers and frankly there’s lots of incentives to travel out of China. All of the Chinese destinations are crowded and obviously air quality is not great. So, there’s a lot of incentive to get [in] an airplane and go visit other countries.”
