Although Thanksgiving didn’t turn out to be as good as expected for the e-retail industry overall, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. WMT saw tremendous increase in its online sales. This year’s Thanksgiving Day the second-best day for Wal-Mart’s online sales, second only to last year’s Cyber Monday.

Neil Ashe, CEO of global e-commerce at Wal-Mart, was on CNBC to discuss the company’s sales expectations for this holiday season.

"We had a good Thursday, Friday, Saturday and we have some of the best deals that are available for customers today. So, traffic is starting to build as the country wakes up and we're looking forward to hopefully a big day," Ashe said.

When asked about what Wal-Mart is doing to ensure that its site doesn't crash the way Best Buy’s site did on Black Friday, Ashe replied, "Over the course of the last couple of years, we have done a ton to improve the shopping experience for our customers. So, we re-built the entire technology platform so, they have a new shopping experience on the site and on the apps and in fact over the Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 70 percent of our traffic, it was record traffic, and 70 percent of that traffic was on mobile."

"I think the definition of what is e-commerce and what is retail commerce in a company like ours, which is uniquely positioned to be both online and in-stores, is quickly fading away," Ashe concluded. "This holiday season's a great example of that."
