The Unemployment rates for the individual US States have been released and the winner for the lowest Unemployment rate????

You guessed it, North Dakota.

The oil boom and agricultural economy keep the people in No. Dakota working (we need to eat and drive places after all).  It also helps to have a low population because it's as cold as a _____________ there.  The low temperature in the winter is either side of 0 degrees – give or take a degree or two.

Lowest Unemployment rate belongs to No. Dakota. The highest rate belongs to the smallest state Rhode Island.

Other fun facts about No Dakota…

  • North Dakota is the only state in the nation to never have an earthquake.
  • We can blame parking meter on North Dakota as it was invented there.
  • North Dakota has the highest number of millionaires per capita than any other state.
  • It is illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on in North Dakota.
  • In 1982 Rutland went into the “Guinness Book of World Records” with the cooking and eating of the World's Largest Hamburger — 3591 pounds.

The state with the highest employment rate is the smallest US state, Rhode Island.  Rhode Island is 7 times smaller than Hawaii.

Other fun facts about Rhode Island

  • Rhode Island is home to the Tennis Hall of Fame.
  • The first traffic law was created in 1678, when authorities banned galloping horses on local streets in Newport. In 1904, the first speeding ticket was also given in Newport.
  • The first circus in the United States was in Newport in 1774.
  • Rhode Islanders were the first to take military action against England by sinking one of her ships in the Narragansett Bay located between Newport and Providence.
  • My youngest sister and family lives in Rhode Island

As an aside the state employment data comes out from separate surveys from the Labor department. They tend to dovetail the cumulative surveys for the NFP and other employment data done for the national economy.

The labor departments website is a rich source of data which if you are so inclined to drill down, this is the source for the information.  After the last employment report, I drilled further down into the data by copying and pasting information into an excel spreadsheet (see: Digging down into the 2014 US job picture) . The webpage that I source is http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.toc.htm.

For global data from the IMF, I saw that all IMF data is now available and free of charge. For that information you can go and explore at: http://elibrary-data.imf.org/DataExplorer.aspx
