Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer has claimed that Windows 7, the new OS offering from the company has sold double the copies in its first few weeks as compared to any of its previous OS versions. The software giant had sold 20 million copies of Windows Vista in its first month, which indicates around 40 million sales of Windows 7 in its first month.

The company and many hardware companies would like these sales to boost the otherwise sluggish PC sales. At the same time, it is hoped that Windows 7 would not suffer from the glitches that Vista had seen which was detrimental to the company’s image. The company also hopes that Windows 7 would help it regain the confidence of consumer categories which have typically been tough for it. Rivals like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) have offerings like Mac which has risen to a 9.2% market share in the 3rd quarter, up from 4.8% in same period four years ago.
