Early Volume Plays In Stocks Trading Close To $7 (TORM, SPIR, CBMX, UWBK)

Some of the stocks that are valued around $7 and are among the high volume movers in the early trading hours are:

TOR Minerals International (NASDAQ: TORM) said yesterday that it made a profit of $0.26 a share in the first quarter, as compared to a loss of $0.15 a share in the year ago quarter. TORM’s revenues for the quarter rose 20% year-over-year to $6.86 million. Following the announcement, TOR’s shares climbed 36.8%, or $2.15, to $8 in the pre-market session. The 50-day average daily volume for TORM is 14,000.

Spire (NASDAQ: SPIR) has climbed more than 11% to $3.90 in after hours yesterday, following the company’s announcement of a US General Services Administration (GSA) contract being awarded to it. This contract allows the Federal Government customers to complete contracts with the solar equipment company quickly and easily. SPIR’s 50-day average daily volume is 86,000.

CombiMatrix (NASDAQ: CBMX) posted its Q1 net income of $15.3 million yesterday versus a net loss of $6.1 million in the year-ago quarter, following which its shares soared 8.6% or $0.32 to $4.05 in yesterday's late session. The biotechnology company’s revenues swung to $1.3 million from $1.2 million in the year-ago quarter. CBMX has a 50-day average daily volume of 27,000.

United Western Bancorp (NASDAQ: UWBK) suffered a loss of 15% or $0.25, to $1.42 in yesterday’s after-market session. The decline followed after the company announced a Q1 loss from continuing operations of $0.86 a share, as compared to an income of $0.48 a share from continuing operations in the year-ago quarter. The 50-day average daily volume for UWBK is 660,000.
