Microsoft Loses Patent Case (MSFT, VHS)
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has been ordered to pay $105.75 million to Software firm VirnetX Holding Corp (AMEX:VHS). VirnetX (VHS) had filed a case against Microsoft (MSFT) for the infringement of two of its patents. VirnetX had demanded $242 million in damages. The jurors held that the infringement of patents was willful.
VirnetX had accused Microsoft of violating its two patents related to virtual private network (VPN) technology. Microsoft has the option of appealing the decision. The decision is one of the largest awards against Microsoft in recent history. In 2009, Microsoft was ordered to pay $290 million to a Canadian technology company, i4i Inc.
Both VirnetX and Microsoft declined to comment.
