Alpharma Agrees To Settle Lawsuit (KG)
Alpharma Inc., a unit of King Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NYSE: KG), has agreed to pay $42.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed against it. Alpharma (KG) was accused of bribing doctors to promote and prescribe its morphine drug Kadian. The case was filed in 2006 by Debra Parks. She will now receive $5.33 million. The remaining money will be split among the federal government and the involved states.
Alpharma was also accused of misrepresenting the safety of Kadian. The pharma company allegedly paid doctors to recommend Kadian from 2000 to 2008. Tony West, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s civil division, said, “Illegal marketing of pharmaceutical drugs jeopardizes the public's confidence in our health-care system."
