A Texas jury awarded VirnetX Holding Corp (AMEX: VHC) nearly $106 million from Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) after it came to the conclusion that Microsoft had violated two of the small communications company's patents.

The patents dealt with ways to make virtual private network connections.

VirnetX Holding Corp said it was awarded $71.75 million for patent violations against one patent and $34 million for violations against another.

Microsoft Corporation doesn't believe that it violated VirnetX Holding Corp's patents and will appeal the verdict.

The $106 million could be tripled if it is determined that Microsoft violated the patents with knowledge of their existence.

However, such a sum would be unlikely to have any significant effect on Microsoft's share price.
