Amazon’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) attempt to open a distribution center in Canada has met with a strong resistance. The Canadian Booksellers’s Association has asked the Canadian government not to approve any such plan.
Stephen Page, president of the association, said, “Individual Canadian booksellers have traditionally played a key role in ensuring the promotion of Canadian authors and Canadian culture," Amazon already has a Canadian website. The online retailer declined to comment on the controversy.
The Canadian government is expected to make a decision soon. Canadian conservative lawmaker Maxime Bernier said, “I think it's good. There are people who want to have more services. The Canadians, in the end, they're going to vote with their dollars, and if they want to buy something they will. People will decide in the end."
